1. The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald
Via en.wikipedia.org
A love story within a love story. It takes the American dream, amplifies it, and then tears it apart in every way possible.
2. To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
The Washington Post / Getty Images
It blends innocence and triumph in a
way that makes you learn something without actually feeling like you’re
learning. Also, you will fall in love with Atticus Finch.
3. Night by Elie Wiesel
Via amazon.com
The Jewish author was sent to
Auschwitz at 15-years-old. This is his story of personal struggle,
heartbreak, and passion. At barely 100 pages, you can’t afford to not
read this book.
4. Lord of the Flies by William Golding
Via amazon.com
Lord of the Flies reveals the true nature of humans and will even make you question your own morality.
5. Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad
Via amazon.com
This novel is the inspiration for Apocalypse Now. Need I say more? (The answer to that question is no.)
6. The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger
MANDEL NGAN / Getty Images
The protagonist’s fear for adulthood will make this one of the most relatable books you will ever read.
7. Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck
It gives new meaning to the American
dream, focusing on power and a friendship that will enrage you with
jealousy (but in a good way).
8. Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell
Via behance.net
This novel will scare the crap out of
you, and you will love it. Besides, Big Brother is watching, so it’s
not like you even have a choice now…
9. Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut
It incorporates time travel and porn stars. Enough said.
10. Frankenstein by Mary Shelley
Via amazon.com
Mary Shelley bet her husband that she could write a better horror story than him. She did.
11. Uncle Tom’s Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe
Because everyone’s in need of a good cry.
12. Animal Farm by George Orwell
This book is basically a satirical
puppet show about a revolution. If anything, you should read it for this
quote: “All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than
others.”
13. Waiting for Godot by Samuel Beckett
It’s a play about two characters who wait for something that never comes, but it’s never dull, just thought-provoking.
14. Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf
Via slate.com
Virginia Woolf will show you how disconnected you are from society, and you will thank her for doing so.
15. Brave New World by Aldous Huxley
Via npr.org
Because you’ve always wondered what the world would be like without religion.
16. As I Lay Dying by William Faulkner
Via amazon.com
Everyone in this novel is pretty messed up, and that’s refreshing. Also, James Franco is releasing a film adaption of the book, so you have to read it before that comes out, too.
17. Catch-22 by Joseph Heller
Via heathcates.com
This is the only book that will make you feel OK about American politics. It’s basically a novel version of The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.
18. One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest by Ken Kesey
Via en.wikipedia.org
It uses literature’s greatest heroes
and villains to make you question authority, freedom, and reality. And
Ken Kesey is an LSD-tripping, counter-cultural genius.
19. The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath
Via thejanedough.com
Its bleak honesty and dark humor will teach you to not sweat the small stuff.
20. Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller
Via en.wikipedia.org
Miller uncovers the reality of the American dream in a way that will make you question your own desire for success.
22. Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka
Via eastwing.co.uk
It will single-handedly change the way you treat people.
23. Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston
It will make you rethink everything you thought you knew about love.
[Have you read any of them? Mrs P.]

Some teachers are sooo cool!
Look at the "menu" a teacher wrote for a parents-teachers meeting, somewhere in America:
[As for me, I would ask for more, and I would be slightly worried that parents would accept my offer to adopt their child!^^ Mrs P.]

Safyia's advice on high school...
Hi y’all!
Hope you’re doing well.
Today’s
article is about advice for new pupils in high school.
Well, firstly you should
know that I may not be the best adviser and the best student model.
Now, let’s
skip the blabber and get right to it.
First and essential advice is to be attentive in
class because, trust me guys, the more you listen and understand the lesson, the less
you have to work at home.
Do not tell me that’s difficult because I know it very well.. it’s really
boring sometimes.
The second
advice, essential as the first is: DO NOT
STUDY BY HEART, IT’S STUPID AND USELESS.
I mean, why should I waste time in
memorizing something that I will forget within a week?!
To get “perfect” marks?
Tell me please where you wanna go or do with good marks if you do not have the
ability to discuss, understand, and especially THINK with your mind.
The other
advice that I can give you is to study with your classmates, it can be really
helpful and funny at the same time!
About homework
and being quiet during all the lesson I will say nothing because, as I told you
at the beginning, I’m not a student model.
So, just have fun during this years,
learn to think with your mind, so you can have a critical thinking, and organize
your time because at college all of this advice will be useful!
Good luck

Do you remember the game? With the 11 puns?
So far, we've got 3 winners (Honey, Grapefruit and Bernabear) and we are left with 4 unexplained puns:
A BIKE CAN'T STAND ALONE BECAUSE IT'S TWO-TIRED
IF A CLOCK GETS HUNGRY IT GOES BACK FOUR SECONDS
JUMPING OFF A PARIS BRIDGE MAKES YOU IN SEINE
I BREAK INTO SONG IF I CAN'T FIND THE KEY
Don't leave those puns unattended... please!

Cam's advice on high school life....
My professor
asked me to give you some advice to prepare yourself for future high school
students! Well I warn you that it is rather ... COOL and HARD !
To start, you
must know that high school is not easy.
One has to take autonomy, work
independently and not rely on their parents to help out!
The high school
prepares you to superior studies with several stages.
The first one is the 2nde that teaches you to fend and shows the clear change between secondary school
and high school.
This is a difficult step to take but which gives you maturity.
The second
stage is the 1ère, which, where you prepare the exam called Baccalaureat..
This is the
first stage of preparation for the Terminale end examination.
The rigor is the key
word of this decisive year that teaches you the basis for the year after.
Première is probably the most stressful, because the examination approaches and this
year goes very very fast.
You must learn to be independent, rigorous,
hardworking, and set a goal: that of passing your BAC.
However, the
high school is not just work!
It is in high school that true
friendships are created, you begin the real partys with friends.
You also
acquire a freedom through the breaks between
courses you can have.
That's the thing that I most prefered for my part.
Professors
are also much more lenient because they see us less like children or
teenagers, we are young adults.
What I can
tell you is that when you are in secondary school you want to go to high school and when
you're there you want to go back to secondary school!
You happy at the beginning and
after you're in a hurry to leave.
Don't be in a hurry and enjoy it!

Advice on high school, by Carter...
This new series of article is about advice for the new pupils in high school.
I chose to give advice in the form of rules, I
will give advice by numbers.
1) Never forget to do your homework ( Do not do like
me, I always do them at the last minute)
2) Never be late ( or at least try ).
3) If you are in English class with Mrs P., it’s
necessary to go on the blog and send coms !
4) I am not the best person to say that but, being focused and a bit silencious in class is important even if it’s difficult
or boring ( necessary in philosophy ).
5) It can appear stupid but it’s necessary to think of
often buying meals on the canteen card.
I have not other ideas, or
just some like be polite; listen to the teachers; try to have the best marks, but
it’s logic and useless to say.
For me, the best advice
will be, do your best and enjoy your high school life !
-Carter-
